The Tiger II is a German heavy tank of the Second World War. The official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf B, often shortened to Tiger B. The ordnance inventory designation was SdKfz 182 (SdKfz 267 & 268 for command vehicles). It is also known under the informal name K&ouml;nigstiger (the German name for the Bengal tiger), often translated literally as Royal Tiger, or somewhat incorrectly as King Tiger by Allied soldiers.
The Tiger II was the successor to the Tiger I, combining the latter&rsquo;s thick armour with the armour sloping used on the Panther medium tank. The tank weighed almost 70 tonnes, and was protected by 100mm to 185mm (3.9&rdquo; to 7.3&rdquo;) of armour to the front. It was armed with the long barreled 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 anti-tank cannon. The chassis was also the basis for the Jagdtiger anti-tank vehicle.
The Tiger II was issued to heavy tank battalions of the Army and the Waffen-SS. It was first used in combat by 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion during the Allied invasion of Normandy on 11 July 1944; on the Eastern Front, the first unit to be outfitted with the Tiger II was the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion, which by 1 September 1944 listed 25 Tiger IIs operational.
Development of the heavy tank had been initiated in 1937 with the initial design contract awarded to Henschel; another contract was given to Porsche in 1939. Both prototype series used the same turret design from Krupp; the main differences were in the hull, transmission, suspension and automotive features.
Henschel won the design contract, and all Tiger IIs were produced by the firm. Two turret designs were used in production vehicles. The initial design is often misleadingly called the Tiger II (P), after the &ldquo;Porsche&rdquo; turret due to misbelieve that it was designed by Porsche for their prototype; in fact it was the initial Krupp design for both prototypes. This turret had a rounded front and steeply sloped sides, with a difficult-to-manufacture curved bulge on the turret&rsquo;s left side to accommodate the commander&rsquo;s cupola. Fifty early turrets were mounted to Henschel&rsquo;s hull and used in action. In December 1943 the more common &ldquo;production&rdquo; turret, sometimes erroneously called the &ldquo;Henschel&rdquo; turret, was simplified with a significantly thicker flat surface to ease manufacturing and to add room for additional ammunition storage.
The Tiger II was developed late in the war and built in relatively small numbers due to severe disruption by Allied bombing raids. Only 492 units were produced. The BA-10 (Broneavtomobil 10) was an armored car developed in the Soviet Union in 1938 and produced until 1941. It was the most produced Soviet pre-1941 heavy armored car &ndash; With 3,311 built in three versions. These were the BA-10, the BA-10M (improved version with new radio), and the BA-10ZhD (equipped for dual railway/road use). The basic BA-10 design was developed from the BA-3 and BA-6 heavy armored cars. It had an improved GAZ-AAA chassis and improved armor. Like its predecessors, the BA-10 could be converted to a half-track by fitting auxiliary tracks to the rear pair of dual tandem wheels. These tracks were often fitted when the vehicle needed to move across snow or soft ground. The BA-10 first saw action against the Japanese in Manchuria at the Battle of Khalkhin Gol in 1939. Some were captured and later used by the Manchukuo. It was involved in all the Soviet Union&rsquo;s subsequent military operations and campaigns of 1939-1940. During World War II the BA-10 was used against the Germans on the Eastern Front, but was rarely seen after the winter of 1941&ndash;42. Later in the war the heavy scouting role was taken over by light tanks such as the T-60 and T-70. A few BA-10s were seen as late as 1943 on the Leningrad front. Large numbers of captured BA-10s were used by Axis powers in Europe. In May 1945 a few BA-10s of ROA fought alongside the defenders of the Prague uprising. The M4 Sherman, officially Medium Tank, M4, was the most widely used medium tank by the United States and Western Allies in WW2. The M4 Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively cheap to produce, and available in great numbers. Thousands were distributed through the Lend-Lease program to the British Commonwealth and the Soviet Union. The tank was named by the British for the American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. The M4 Sherman evolved from the M3 Medium Tank, which had its main armament in a side sponson mount. The M4 retained much of the previous mechanical design, but housed the main 75mm gun in a fully traversing turret. One feature, a one-axis gyrostabilizer, was not precise enough to allow firing when moving but did help keep the reticle on target, so that when the tank did stop to fire, the gun would be aimed in roughly the right direction. The designers stressed mechanical reliability, ease of production and maintenance, durability, standardization of parts and ammunition in a limited number of variants, and moderate size and weight. These factors, combined with Sherman&rsquo;s then-superior armor and armament, outclassed German light and medium tanks fielded in 1939 to 42. The M4 went on to be produced in large numbers. It spearheaded many offensives by the Western Allies after 1942. When the M4 tank (Sherman I by the British naming system) went into combat in North Africa with the British Army at El Alamein in late 1942, it increased the advantage of Allied armor over Axis armor and was superior to the lighter German and Italian tank designs. For this reason, the US Army believed that the M4 would be adequate to win the war, and no pressure was exerted for further tank development. Logistical and transport restrictions, such as limitations imposed by roads, ports, and bridges, also complicated the introduction of a more capable but heavier tank. Tank destroyer battalions using vehicles built on the M4 hull and chassis, but with open-topped turrets and more potent high-velocity guns, also entered widespread use in the Allied armies. Even by 1944, most M4 Shermans kept their dual purpose 75mm gun. By 1944, the M4 was inferior in firepower and armor to increasing numbers of German heavy tanks, but was able to fight on with numerical superiority and mutual support from growing numbers of fighter-bombers and artillery pieces. Some Shermans were produced with a more capable gun, the 76mm gun M1, or refitted with an Ordnance QF17-pounder by the British (the Sherman Firefly). The relative ease of production allowed large numbers of the M4 to be manufactured and significant investment in tank recovery and repair units allowed disabled vehicles to be repaired and returned to service quickly. These factors combined to give the Allies numerical superiority in most battles, and many infantry divisions were provided with M4s and tank destroyers.

The SU-122 (from Samokhodnaya Ustanovka 122) was a Soviet self-propelled howitzer or assault gun used during World War II. The number &ldquo;122&rdquo; in the designation represents the caliber of the main armament, the 122mm M-30S howitzer. The chassis was that of the T-34. Initial design work of a prototype U-35 assault gun, armed with the 122mm howitzer and built on the T-34 medium tank, was completed in August 1942. The project emphasized minimizing modifications to the platform and the howitzer. It used the same chassis, superstructure, engine and transmission and was armed with a new 122mm M-30S howitzer. The U-35 entered service with the Red Army as the SU-35 (later renamed SU-122). SU-122 production began in December 1942 with 27 vehicles built that month. The original plan for production beyond that point was to produce 100 SU-122s each month. Production continued until the summer of 1944, by which time a total of about 1,150 SU-122s had been built. The SU-85 (Samokhodnaya Ustanovka 85) was a Soviet casemate-style self-propelled gun used during World War II, based on the chassis of the T-34 medium tank. Earlier Soviet self-propelled guns were meant to serve as either assault guns, such as the SU-122, or as tank destroyers; the SU-85 fell into the latter category. The designation &ldquo;85&rdquo; signifies the bore of the vehicle&rsquo;s armament, the 85mm D-5S gun. Based on the SU-122 chassis, SU-85 entered production in mid-1943, with the first vehicles reaching their units by August. When the up-gunned T-34/85 medium tank entered mass production in the spring of 1944, there was no point in continuing production of a tank destroyer without superior firepower, so SU-85 production was stopped in late 1944 after 2,050 vehicles had been produced. It was replaced on the production lines by the SU-100 tank destroyer, armed with the more powerful 100mm D-10S gun. The 75mm Field Gun M1897 on M2 Carriage was a field gun and anti-tank gun which was used by the US Army during the interwar period and World War II. Originally of French design, the Canon de 75 mod&egrave;le 1897 was supplied to the United States in large numbers and became the standard field gun for the US Army during World War I. In US service the mle 1897 was given the designation 75mm Gun M1897. In 1932, a modified gun known as the M2 was standardized for limited production. It took advantage of new projectiles and developments in high explosives. Existing box trail 75mm gun carriages were given sprung axles, steel wheels, and pneumatic tires to allow them to be towed behind vehicles at higher speeds. On January 18, 1934, the conversion kit for existing guns was standardized, and modernized guns were given the designations &ldquo;75mm Field Gun M1897A1&rdquo; through &ldquo;75mm Field Gun M1897A4&rdquo;. Modernization of 75mm guns also involved placing M1897 guns on new M2A1 carriages. Production of the M2A2 carriage began in 1936, but the conversion process was slow. After the defeat of France by Nazi Germany in the spring of 1940, The Army became worried about its lack of modern antitank guns. In July 1940, a simplified and improved carriage with retractable crescent-shaped jacks known as the M2A3 was introduced, and it was decided to mount M1897 guns on both M2A2 and M2A3 carriages and equip them with direct-fire sights so they could be used as anti-tank guns. These guns were issued to both field artillery and anti-tank units.

The Landing Vehicle, Tracked (LVT) is an amphibious warfare vehicle and amphibious landing craft, introduced by the US Navy. LVTs were used by the US Marine Corps, US Army, Canadian, Australian and British armies during WW2. Originally intended solely as cargo carriers for ship to shore operations, they evolved into assault troop and fire support vehicles. The types were known as Amphtrack, &ldquo;Amtrak&rdquo;, &ldquo;Amtrac&rdquo;, etc. (portmanteaus of &ldquo;amphibious tractor&rdquo;), and &ldquo;alligator&rdquo; or &ldquo;gator&rdquo;. The LVT had its origins in a civilian rescue vehicle called the Alligator. Developed by Donald Roebling in 1935, the Alligator was intended to operate in swampy areas, inaccessible to both traditional cars and boats. Two years later, Roebling built a redesigned vehicle with improved water speed. The US Marine Corps, which had been developing amphibious warfare doctrine based on the ideas of Lt. Col Earl Hancock &ldquo;Pete&rdquo; Ellis and others, became interested in the machine after learning about it through an article in Life magazine and convinced Roebling to design a more seaworthy model for military use. Roebling completed a militarized prototype by May 1940 and later replaced it with a more powerful engine; the USMC tested the design in November 1940. Impressed by the prototype, 100 units were built using all-steel construction, for a more rugged and easily produced design, and the first LVT-1 was delivered in July 1941. Another 200 units were ordered even before the first production units were delivered. After more improvements to meet requirements of the Navy, the vehicle was adopted as &ldquo;Landing Vehicle Tracked&rdquo; or LVT. The LVT-1 could carry 18 fully equipped men or 4,500 pounds (2,041 kg) of cargo. Originally intended to carry replenishment from ships to shore, they lacked armor protection and their tracks and suspension were unreliable when used on hard terrain. However, the Marines soon recognized the potential of the LVT as an assault vehicle. A battalion of LVTs was ready for the 1st Marine Division by 16 February 1942. LVTs saw their first operational use in Guadalcanal, where they were used exclusively for landing supplies. About 128 LVTs were available for the landings. The LVT-2 Water Buffalo (British designation Buffalo II) was an improved LVT-1. In August 1943, based on theLVT-2, the LVT-4 Water Buffalo (Buffalo IV) was introduced by moving the engine forward and adding a large ramp door in the rear, allowing troops to exit from the rear of the vehicle. Capacity went from 17 troops in the LVT-2 to 30, making earlier LVTs largely obsolete. This innovation also greatly facilitated the loading and unloading of cargo. Some vehicles received armor kits. It was by far the most numerous version of the LVT, with 8,348 units delivered. Many of the British LVT-4 were armed with a 20mm Polsten cannon and 2 x .30 cal Browning machine guns. The LVT-4 first saw action at Saipan in June 1944.

When the Germans ran into the spring thaw on the Eastern Front they desperately needed more mobile vehicles to provide men and materiel to forward units. One solution was to take reliable wheeled vehicles and modify them to use a tracked drive system. The SdKfz 3 Maultier (&ldquo;Mule&rdquo;) is the name given to series of half-track trucks used by Germans during WW2. They were based on Opel, Mercedes-Benz, Alfa-Romeo or Ford trucks. One of the best known of these conversions was the SdKfz 3a Maultier based on the 3-ton variant of the Opel Blitz cargo truck. During the beginning of 1941 German troops discovered that their wheeled transport vehicles were unsuitable for the muddy rasputitsa conditions at the beginning of the invasion of Russia. Only halftracks were able to operate in these conditions, but removing them from their combat role for supply duties was not feasible, so it was decided to produce half-tracked versions of standard Opel, Daimler-Benz, Alfa-Romeo and Ford trucks (lorries) by removing their rear axles, truncating the prop shafts and connecting them to redundant Panzer I track assemblies. Heavier trucks (4 tons payload) were fitted with Panzer II track assemblies. Most Maultier conversions were based on Opel Blitz model S trucks, which proved successful in service. While lacking the overall mobility of purpose-built halftracks they were cheaper and sufficiently effective. From 1943, some Maultier trucks were fitted with armored bodies, designated SdKfz 4. Some of these were armed with 10 tubed rocket launcher Panzerwerfer 42, and were designated SdKfz 4/1. The BA-3 was a heavy armoured car developed in the Soviet Union in 1933, followed by a slightly changed model BA-6 in 1936. The armoured car had the same turret as the T-26 M33 and BT-5 tanks and was equipped with a 45mm main gun. Around 180 BA-3 cars were built until production ended in 1935. The BA-6 followed with 386 cars produced between 1936 and 1938. The innovation that slightly improved mobility was the auxiliary (&ldquo;Overall&rdquo;) tracks that could be fitted onto the rear tandem wheels which converted the car to a half-track. The BA-3 was externally very similar to the BA-6; the BA-3 retained door in the rear of the hull that was not present in the BA-6. More important improvements of BA-6 were the new GK tires, filled with sponge (porous rubber) and thus much less vulnerable to small-caliber fire. On the downside, the tires reduced both the speed and range of the vehicle. It also had a somewhat thinned armor plating. BA-3/6 cars were superseded by the BA-10 model. All cars of this series were very heavily armed for the era; they could knock out other vehicles with ease, including tanks. However, their thin armor made them vulnerable to heavy machine gun and small caliber cannon fire. A prototype railway BA-3ZD variant was created in 1936 but was not accepted for production. The BA-6ZD was produced in limited numbers.
Theatres of War Around 60 BA-6 cars were delivered to Turkey in 1935. The BA-3/6 was used in combat in the Spanish Civil War, against the Japanese in the Battle of Khalkhyn Gol, in the Finnish Winter War, and against the Germans in the early stages of the Eastern Front. The German Army used a few Spanish-built six-wheeled armored cars that were close copies of the BA-3/6 series. Later in the war, the BA-3/6/10 was replaced in the Red Army&rsquo;s heavy scout vehicle role by light tanks, such as the T-60 and T-70. A few captured BA-3 cars were used by Finnish army under designation BAF-A, and captured BA-6 cars under designation BAF-B. The SdKfz 251/9, also called &ldquo;kanonenwagen&rdquo;, was equipped with a short-barrel 75mm (2.95 in) howitzer, which used the same mounting as the StuG III. It was nicknamed &ldquo;Stummel&rdquo; (Stump), and committed in great numbers on the Eastern Front. First ordered in a March 1942 specification, B&uuml;ssing-NAG delivered two prototypes in June, tested in Russia. A first batch of 150 vehicles was delivered during the following months, based on the Ausf C. By late 1944, a major modification included a revised modular higher gun-mount with a coaxial MG42 for close defense. This modular version was sometimes called &ldquo;Kanone 51&rdquo; and was also used to create the SdKfz 250/8 and the SdKfz 234/3. The latter design gave better protection, better depression and higher traverse (20&deg; on each side). Normal traverse was 10 to 12&deg; on each side, and a -5 +20&deg; elevation. The gun provision was 52 rounds, but many were carried wherever it was possible, notably on the rifle racks and crammed in extra soft bags. Scissor binoculars and relocated a Fuspr.f 2 meter rod-antenna were also present. The Stummel was first introduced with the SS-Panzerregiment 4 &ldquo;Der F&uuml;hrer&rdquo;, 2nd SS Armored Division and, later, (after the Ausf D came into service in 1944) in most armored reconnaissance units, and the paratrooper division &ldquo;Hermann G&ouml;ring&rdquo;. Such vehicles could be carried inside the Me323 &ldquo;Gigant&rdquo;. The SdKfz 250/8 was the standard SPG variant, carrying the short barrel 75mm (2.95 in) KwK37 L/24 howitzer and, later, a K51(Sf) with 20 rounds in store. Production was planned in the spring of 1943 with the Alte chassis (but never produced), and then switched to the Neu chassis in 1944 when actual production begun. The SdKfz 251/16 (based on the SdKfz 251/1) was fitted with two flame projectors and initially a rear mounted flamethrower (Ausf C only), detachable but still connected to the vehicle, to be operated by dismounted infantry. The VW Schwimmwagen Type 166 (Swimming Car) was used extensively by German ground forces during WW2. It was one of the most numerous mass-produced amphibious four-wheel drive off-roaders in history. The Volkswagen Schwimmwagen was a mix of the VW Type 86 four-wheel drive model with elements of the VW Type 87 command-car. This used the air-cooled &ldquo;flat-four&rdquo; boxer and a manual transmission with four speeds. It had two transfer cases and a 4WD capability on the first and reverse gears. The initial prototype was called the Type 128. The 128 was quickly put into production despite showing some flaws that became obvious in operational theaters of war like the eastern front; less than a hundred cars were produced. When all the flaws were removed, and a new reinforced hull introduced the new Type 166 was born. The Type 166 proved far more reliable and was also simplified for mass production. The first of these vehicles equipped SS units on the eastern front and they proved valuable in marshy grounds like in the Pripet, many served also in Wehrmacht units in North Africa and Tunisia, Sicilia, and Europe. They were seen, like the K&uuml;belwagen, in nearly all theaters of war. It was light and reliable and served for scouting, transport, dispatching, command cars, and regular officer cars on the frontline. They were unarmed but proved versatile, sturdy and reliable. Soldiers sometimes nicknamed them &ldquo;the Frosche&rdquo; (&ldquo;frog&rdquo;). From 1941 to 1944, 15,584 Type 166 Schwimmwagen cars were produced. The Schwimmwagen remains the most heavily produced amphibious car in history. Its VW mechanical basis made it popular after the war and 166 survived to this day in museums and private collections, often in running condition. Rubicon American M102 105mm Light Howitzer
The M102 is a light, towable 105mm howitzer used by the United States Army in the Vietnam War, the First Gulf War, and the Iraq War. The M102 105mm howitzer is used in air mobile (helicopter), attack plane, and light infantry operations. The weapon carriage is lightweight welded aluminum, mounted on a variable recoil mechanism. The weapon is manually loaded and positioned, and can be towed by a 2-ton truck or High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), can be transported by UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, or can be dropped by parachute with airborne units. When emplaced, the howitzer&rsquo;s high volume of fire compensates in large measure for the lower explosive weight of the projectile compared to the Army&rsquo;s 155mm and 8-inch howitzers. Since 1964, the Army acquired 1,150 M102 towed howitzers. The weapon is being replaced by the M119-series 105mm howitzer.

The 7.5cm PaK 40 (7,5cm Panzerabwehrkanone 40) was a German 7.5cm anti-tank gun developed in 1939 to 1941 by Rheinmetall and used during WW2. The PaK 40 formed the backbone of German anti-tank guns for the latter part of the war, mostly in towed form, but also on a number of tank destroyers such as the Marder series. Approximately 20,000 PaK 40s were produced between 1942 and 1945. Development of the PaK 40 began after reports of new Soviet tank designs began to reach Berlin in 1939. The 5cm PaK 38 was still in testing at this point, but it appeared it would not be powerful enough to deal with these newer designs. Contracts were placed with Krupp and Rheinmetall to develop what was essentially a 7.5cm version of the PaK 38. However, while the PaK 38 made extensive use of light alloys to reduce overall gun weight, these were now earmarked for Luftwaffe. As a result, the PaK 40 used steel throughout its construction and was proportionally heavier than the 5cm model. To simplify production, the PaK 38&rsquo;s curved gun shield was replaced by one using three flat plates. The project was initially given low priority, but following the invasion of the USSR in 1941 and the appearance of heavily armoured Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and KV-1, it was given an increased priority. The first pre-production guns were delivered in November 1941. In April 1942, the Wehrmacht had 44 guns in service; by 1943, the PaK 40 formed the bulk of German anti-tank artillery. The weapon was effective against almost every Allied tank until the end of the war. The Pak 40 was much heavier than the Pak 38; its decreased mobility meant that it was difficult or even impossible to move without an artillery tractor on boggy ground. After the war, the Pak 40 remained in service in several European armies, including Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Norway, Hungary and Romania. The US Military M274 Truck, Platform, Utility, 1&frasl;2 Ton, 4X4 or &ldquo;Carrier, Light Weapons, Infantry, 1&frasl;2 ton, 4x4&rdquo;, also known as the &ldquo;Mule&rdquo;, &ldquo;Military Mule&rdquo;, or &ldquo;Mechanical Mule&rdquo;, is a 4-wheel drive, gasoline-powered truck/tractor type vehicle that can carry up to 1&frasl;2 short ton (0.45 tonnes) off-road. It was introduced in 1956 and used until the 1980s. The M274 Mule was introduced in 1956 to supplement both the 1&frasl;4-short-ton (0.23-tonne) trucks (&ldquo;Jeeps&rdquo;) and 3&frasl;4-short-ton (0.68-tonne) trucks (Weapons Carrier Series and M37 series) in airborne and infantry battalions. The M274 evolved from improvements to a vehicle designed at the end of World War Two by Willys-Overland as a medical evacuation litter carrier from areas and terrain that would be a problem for the standard light vehicle of the period (the Jeep) to access. A total of 11,240 Mules produced between 1956 and 1970 when production ceased. They were used throughout as platforms for various weapons systems and for carrying men, supplies, and weaponry/ammunition during the Vietnam War and in other US military operations until the 1980s. As a completely open and exposed vehicle, they offered absolutely no protection to the driver, yet that was relatively unimportant as they were mainly used as cargo carriers and medium-range infantry support vehicles, rather than tactical vehicles. The driver&rsquo;s seat could be removed and the steering column moved forward and the vehicle driven in reverse to accommodate more cargo. If under fire the steering column could be moved further forward and down, so the operator could operate the vehicle while crawling behind it. They were phased out from military usage in the 1980s with the introduction of the HMMWV series vehicles. The HMMWV was, however, unable to fulfill the role of the Mule, so the M-Gator, a military variant of the popular John Deere Gator vehicle, was introduced. The M274 Mules were often outfitted with a wide array of weaponry, especially in the Vietnam War. They could be modified to carry virtually any type of conventional weapon that could be mounted on a truck. The M113 is a fully tracked armored personnel carrier (APC) that was developed and produced by the FMC Corporation. The M113 was sent to United States Army Europe in 1961 to replace the mechanized infantry&rsquo;s M59 APCs. The M113 was first used in combat in April 1962 after the United States provided the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) with heavy weaponry such as the M113, under the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) program. Eventually, the M113 was the most widely used armored vehicle of the US Army in the Vietnam War and was used to break through heavy thickets in the midst of the jungle to attack and overrun enemy positions. It was largely known as an &ldquo;APC&rdquo; or an &ldquo;ACAV&rdquo; (armored cavalry assault vehicle) by the allied forces. The M113 was the first aluminum hull combat vehicle to be put into mass production. Much lighter than earlier similar vehicles, its aluminum armor was designed to be thick enough to protect the crew and passengers against small arms fire, but light enough that the vehicle was air transportable and moderately amphibious. The M3A1 Scout Car (also known as the White Scout Car in British Commonwealth service) was an American-produced armoured car that saw wide service during WW2 and beyond. The M3A1 Scout Car was a machine gun armed lightly armoured open topped four-wheel drive vehicle designed to be used in a reconnaissance role. The vehicle was crewed by a driver and commander, while there was seating for six additional occupants in the rear. The M3A1 Scout Car was typically armed with a .50 cal M2 Browning HMG and one or two .30 cal M1917 Browning HMG (early variant) or M1919 Browning MMG (late variant). All were mounted on a skate rail upon which the pintle mounts could be moved. Due to its open top, the occupants were also able to employ their personal weapons. The M3A1 Scout Car was used by cavalry units of the US Army during the North African Campaign and the invasion of Sicily, being employed for reconnaissance, screening and as an armored command vehicle. It was fast and reliable, making it popular with its crews. Throughout 1943 most US Army units replaced the M3A1 with the M8 armored car and the similar M20 Utility Car, although the M3A1 was retained for rear area security and convoy escort duties. A small number of M3A1s were employed in Normandy and used by the US Marine Corps in the Pacific theater. In Red Army service, the M3A1 was used as an armored personnel carrier and remained in widespread service throughout the war. The Chinese Nationalist Army received M3A1 Scout Cars from 1942 and used them throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. After the war, many vehicles were sold, mostly to Asian and Latin American countries while they remained in Soviet service until 1947. A few vehicles were used by Israel in the 1948 Arab&ndash;Israeli War. France employed its M3A1s in the First Indochina War and the Algerian War. By late 1990 the only country with the M3A1s remaining in service was the Dominican Republic. The Ordnance QF 25-pounder, or more simply 25-pounder or 25-pdr, was the major British field gun and howitzer during the Second World War, possessing a 3.45-inch (87.6 mm) calibre. It was introduced into service just before the war started, combining both high-angle and direct-fire abilities, a relatively high rate of fire, and a reasonably lethal shell in a highly mobile piece. It remained the British Army&rsquo;s primary artillery field piece well into the 1960s, with smaller numbers serving in training units until the 1980s. Many Commonwealth countries used theirs in active or reserve service until about the 1970s and ammunition for the weapon is currently being produced by Pakistan Ordnance Factories. Initial production was slow, but by 1945 over 13,000 units had been manufactured. The 25-pounder was probably the most outstanding field artillery piece used by British and Commonwealth forces in the Second World War, being durable, easy to operate and versatile. The 25-pounder fired &ldquo;separate&rdquo; or two-part ammunition &ndash; the projectile was loaded separately from the propelling charge in its (usually brass) cartridge case with its integral primer. Typically for a quick-firing gun, the cartridge case provided obturation. There were many marks of cartridge, mostly differentiated by propellant type. Double-base propellant (nitrocellulose/nitroglycerine) was the UK standard but one mark used US single-base (nitrocellulose only). However, triple-base nitrocellulose/nitroglycerine/picrite was used throughout the war and eventually replaced all others. The 25-pounder main ammunition was the high-explosive (HE) streamlined shell with a 5/10 CRH ogive and boat tail. The explosive filling varied between 450-900g of TNT (854-1708 kilojoules of explosive energy). It was also provided with base ejection smoke (white and coloured), star shells, and chemical shells. Incendiary and coloured flare shells were developed but not introduced into service, and smoke shells were sometimes reloaded with propaganda leaflets or metal foil &ldquo;window&rdquo;. The UK did not develop a WP smoke shell for the 25-pounder. For anti-tank use, the 25-pounder was also supplied with a limited amount of 20 pounds (9.1 kg) solid armour-piercing (AP) shot, later replaced with a more potent version with a ballistic cap (APBC). The AP shot was fired with maximum charge, charge No. 3, super, or super with Super increment depending on the ordnance mark, as muzzle velocity was critical in direct fire for penetration and a flat trajectory. The Ordnance Quick-Firing 17-pounder (or just 17-pdr) was a 76.2 mm (3 inch) gun developed by the British during World War II. It was used as an anti-tank gun on its own carriage, as well as equipping a number of British tanks. Before the QF 6-pounder had entered service, the British predicted that it would soon be inadequate given the increasing armour of German tanks. In late 1940 the design of a replacement began, and was largely completed by the end of 1941.

At the outbreak of the war, the British Army was still in the final stages of mechanisation.&nbsp; There was a widespread shortage of vehicles of all sizes which became more acute when the Army was mobilised for war.&nbsp; In particular there was a lack of light vehicles for local liaison, communication, transport, casualty evacuation and general utility work at the smaller unit level (that of the company or battalion).&nbsp; While senior officers may have a staff car, junior officers and other ranks found motorised transport indispensable in an increasingly mechanised army where movements could be made of dozens of miles on graded roads.
Faced with a lack of utility vehicles, the Ministry of Supply co-ordinated with the major British car manufacturers to produce military utility versions of their existing mid-size saloon cars.&nbsp; They were all officially classed as&nbsp;Car, Light Utility 4 x 2.
The adaptation of each manufacturer&rsquo;s chosen model to &ldquo;Utility&rdquo; specification varied in detail but was broadly the same.&nbsp; The rear body was swapped for a simple pickup truck load bed covered by a canvas roof (commonly known as a 'tilt'), making the Utility a two or three seater in the cab.&nbsp; The bodywork was simplified with simpler pressed-steel stampings. &nbsp;Paint replaced chrome on the grille and bumpers.&nbsp; Interiors and seats were simplified and untrimmed without carpets or leather.&nbsp; Electrical systems were swapped from the usual civilian 6-volt type to the military-standard 12-volts.&nbsp; Parts such as headlamps were smaller types than the civilian cars and standardised across all models.&nbsp; Engines were low-compression varieties to allow running on poor-quality petrol.&nbsp; They were also fitted with parts such as larger radiators and fans, uprated suspension that offered a greater load capacity and increased ground clearance. Taller and wider tyres were used to further improve traction and ground clearance.
The result was a cheap, simple mass-produced small vehicle that could be used for almost any purpose.&nbsp; The Utilities had an all-up weight of about two tons (2,000kg) and most had a towbar so they could pull a single-axle trailer.&nbsp;
