Before that, 2015's Aureate Gloom took musical influence from '70s New York punk. Project leader Kevin Barnes continues a sudden but enthusiastic trend toward more synths here, on an album that was inspired by the '80s phenomenon of releasing extended dance mixes of pop singles, which one would only hear played in clubs. In a statement about the record, Barnes explained that he used the same drum sample packs across tracks to get a consistent and characteristic sound. While he also continues to abandon a practice of recording with a live band -- one that may have ended with Aureate Gloom -- he is joined on the album by some key long-distance contributors. Zac Colwell (woodwinds, synths, percussion) is a former collaborator whose judiciously placed saxophone reinforces the '80s effect here, and touring bandmembers JoJo Glidewell (synths, keys) and Clayton Rychlik (drums) have been part of Of Montreal's recording core for much of the 2010s. Still, as Barnes is often wont to do, White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood doesn't sound quite like anything they've done prior, once one looks beyond its distinctively serpentine quality and Barnes' calling-card loquaciousness. With reference to the latter, the album presents six over-five-minute-long dance-funk tracks with titles like "Paranoiac Intervals/Body Dysmorphia" and "Plateau Phase/No Careerism No Corruption." Lyrics grapple with sociopolitical and societal topics like intersectionality, gentrification, and online-only encounters -- to name a few from the slinky opening track alone -- as well as sex, drugs, and music. On "Plateau," he makes hip-grinding choruses out of neurotic lines like "If we put our ear to the ceiling/We can hear the multiverse seeding/We can hear the simulation wheezing...." Accompanying arrangements are generally dense but melodic, often capturing a certain basement-club je ne sais quoi. Tracks: Lift Lita-Ruta Taxi Route Cheese Eye Hikageno Dody Hollow Vektor Migiri Bricolage MusicPerformer Notes: <ul><li>There's a song called "Bricolagemusic" on Shugo Tokumaru's sixth album Toss, and it's a perfect statement of purpose: While Tokumaru made most of his other albums on his own (except for playing the drums), this time he throws the doors wide open, inviting members of his live band, an orchestra, Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier, and art collective Maywa Denki to record source material that he later edited into these songs. Entering the process with a blank slate -- Tokumaru had no songs prepared, and wasn't even sure he was making an album -- seems to have unlocked a new level of creativity. Toss is some of his widest-ranging, most audacious music to date, and though the album took much longer than expected to complete, spontaneity and freshness define even relatively straightforward songs like the pretty ballads "Route" and "Hikageno." Things get considerably more bonkers on "Cheese Eye," which Tokumaru co-wrote with composer Chikara Uemizutaru as a tribute to Carl Stalling and other composers/arrangers for vintage American cartoons, and on the barely controlled chaos of "Taxi." Most of Toss lands somewhere between these extremes, and even with the album's radical approaches (including the use of a graphic score for "Hollow"'s asymmetrical pop), Tokumaru's style is unmistakable. Songs such as "Lift" and "Lita-Ruta" sound like especially energetic outtakes from In Focus?, while the shape-shifting standout "Vektor," a collaboration with Otamatone creators Maywa Denki, is surprising only in that these talents haven't joined forces before. As its title implies, Toss' unpredictable approach means that sometimes it sounds more scattered than some of Tokumaru's previous work. Good Morning, the Melbourne duo of Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons, are rulebreakers. Not in a sexy, flamboyant way - more in a casual, resigned kind of way. Accidental and incidental rulebreakers. They are friends first, band second, business third, often in spite of function, and often at their own expense. Every time the machinations of the industry have zigged, Good Morning have zagged.

In late 2019, after the release of The Option and Basketball Breakups, with a lengthy American tour looming, Good Morning decided to go back to basics - to record as a duo again, as they had on 2014's Shawcross and 2016's Glory. Over the course of the year, they demoed any number of songs in their Collingwood studio space, meeting up every Tuesday to write and record together as they always had. In November, as their American tour wrapped up, the pair decamped in Chicago, to properly record the demos they had amassed at Wilco's famed studio, The Loft, with Tom Schick, the studio's in-house engineer. Despite how quietly epochal Barnyard is - a milestone in the history of Good Morning - it's also the band's most meditative record, thoughtful and careful in it's evocations. Barnyard is world-weary, concerned with the state of things in a loose, unfocussed sort of way. In other words, like we all are - frustrated both with the way things are and with everyone's general inability to fix any of the many issues endemic to our society. In spite of the appropriately bleak vibe, these songs feature some of Good Morning's catchiest and most distinctive productions. The spritely groove and easygoing harmonies of "Depends On What I Know" belie it's frustration-ridden lyrics; the gripping, awesome propulsion of "Country" persists in spite of it's appeal to return to a simpler, easier way of being. Thoughtful, melodic, and idiosyncratic, Barnyard is all the things one might love about Good Morning, this time around presented with the fat trimmed and the edges sharpened, loose ends tied and ducks all in a row.

They have, in part and sum, never been better. And there are some purely beautiful spans, too-the church- organ fantasia of "Fourth Figure," or the blue-skies bridge of "Belinda Says." Which isn't to say that Generationals have made an anachronistic homage. On the contrary, the duo of ex-Eames Era members singer/guitarists Grant Widmer and Ted Joyner have a knack for making catchy, immediately infectious music that stands on its own, even as it references a wide variety of influences. In that sense, Heza balances Generationals' more guitar-oriented, Velvet Underground-influenced rock sound with a sublime keyboard and electronic vibe. Tracks like "Extra Free Year," "Put a Light On," and "Say When" have a laid-back quality and a vinyl LP production warmth that combine the handclap-inducing, neon-colored sound of Tom Tom Club with the dreamy Afro-pop of Vampire Weekend. After a 15-year hiatus, Seattle, WA's David Bazan reformed his legendary project Pedro the Lion with the release of Phoenix, it's first new album in over a decade. 2022 release. Alvvays' third album, the nervy joyride that is the compulsively lovable Blue Rev, doesn't simply reassert what's always been great about Alvvays but instead reimagines it. They have, in part and sum, never been better. There are newly aggressive moments here-the gleeful and snarling guitar solo at the heart of opener "Pharmacist," or the explosive cacophony near the middle of "Many Mirrors." And there are some purely beautiful spans, too-the church- organ fantasia of "Fourth Figure," or the blue-skies bridge of "Belinda Says." But the power and magic of Blue Rev stems from Alvvays' ability to bridge ostensible binaries, to fuse elements that seem antithetical in single songs-cynicism and empathy, anger and play, clatter and melody, the soft and the steely. The luminous poser kiss-off of "Velveteen," the lovelorn confusion of "Tile by Tile," the panicked but somehow reassuring rush of "After the Earthquake."

You may know Rodrigo Amarante already. You may have heard "Tuyo," his theme tune to the Netflix drama Narcos, or the Little Joy album, recorded with Fab Moretti and Binki Shapiro, you might have noted his name among the credits on songs by Gal Costa, Norah Jones and Gilberto Gil; or perhaps you saw him play live with Brazilian samba big band Orquestra Imperial, or with Rio rockers Los Hermanos; you really should have heard his debut album, Cavalo, released in 2014. You may think you know Rodrigo Amarante already, but Drama, his second solo album, is going to introduce a whole new level of confusion to the mix.

Drama is purposefully caricatural, cinematic; "As biased as memory". It flows as an arch, playfully deceiving, like a tale. The ominous opening number gives you a hint that things might not be what they appear, and clues are hiding in plain sight. "Projection, attachment, deception: that is Drama.". The sunny upbeat start of "Maré", with a nearly childish opening melody, echoes something less naïf: "The tide will fetch what the ebb brings". The beat helps you move past. "Tango" sounds like falling in love on the dance floor, warm and tropical, it celebrates companionship, while perhaps pleading for it, yearning. "Tara," meanwhile, feels like something Astrud Gilberto might have sung at the height of bossa nova's global popularity, with the twist of the big-band-era muted horns on the chorus, nearly self-deprecating, as if mocking such idealized infatuation. Drama closes with the piano on "The End." To live is to fall. After all the emotional upheavals the singer has put his cast through, is this some kind of farewell to this mortal coil? "Everything Furthers." says Amarante. "Whispering, you get louder like that, people respond better to an invitation", and adds: "Staring at the absurd while remaining kind, being open to the gifts of confusion; that's why we create these tools that are stories and songs, to help us see each other."

Drama

On Oceanator's third full-length album, Everything is Love and Death, songwriter Elise Okusami showcases her exceptional pop sensibilities, delivering 11 tracks full of melodic depth and lively energy. Produced by Grammy nominated engineer/producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Turnstile, Bartees Strange), the new album features some of the biggest and boldest songs Okusami has ever written, such as the anthemic and sludgy "Drift Away," featuring backing vocals from NNAMDÏ.

"How do you identify?" coos a robotic voice over a strikingly modern mix of bright synthpop and surging rave. The question too feels very of it's time-as outdated ideas about gender and attraction are being overturned-but it's also a fair ask whenever Of Montreal debuts an album. The project's 14th LP follows two full decades of mercurial creative mania: swallowing up '60s psych-pop, Prince-ly funk, and glammy prog in turn; morphing freely between full-band affair and cloistered confessional booth; comprising lyrics both painfully personal and absurdly fantastical; and recently drawing site-specific inspiration from culture capitals like San Francisco or New York City. The thread that runs through it all is Athens, GA's Kevin Barnes, and Innocence Reaches finds him at his most light-hearted in years, working a Parisian stint, Top 40 sounds, and his newfound single status into the kaleidoscopic swirl. Even as he continues to sift the sonic and emotional detritus of his past, Barnes sums up his current mood in the opener's title: "let's relate."
