UK collection that focuses on the great '60s Soul music released on the New York labels Scepter, Wand and Musicor. The imprints were much more than the hits of the time, already widely available so we've gone back to the one-offs, the neglected and indeed the newly discovered sides that have turned up in recent times. Big city ballads are rightly represented and the notable ones include Winfield Parker's scarce 'Will There Ever Be Another Love for Me', George Tindley's beautiful 'So Help Me Woman' and a previously unissued version of the popular beat ballad 'Millionaire' by the unknown artist Lee Thomas. Finally we're including Johnny Maestro's flip to 'Stepping Out of the Picture', 'Afraid of Love', which is a corking early Soul sound deserving of plays. Kent. 2011.

Manhattan Soul: Scepter Wand & Musicor / Various

In 1972, Rick Hall moved distribution of his Fame label from Capitol to United Artists. This was to give his label more heft internationally as well as Stateside. The first single from this new agreement was Candi Staton's 'In The Ghetto' which was released in May 1972. Not only did the single do well, but Staton received a personal note from Elvis Presley telling her how much he had enjoyed her version of the song. Two more successful singles - 'Lovin', You, Lovin' Me' and 'Do It In The Name Of Love' - followed before her third Fame album - "Candi Staton" - became the first LP to be distributed under the new agreement with United Artists. Containing all three singles and B-sides such as 'You Don't Love Me No More' and 'The Thanks I Get For Loving You' "Candi Staton" is a ten track beauty, a fantastic album and a cornerstone of Southern Soul. Ace have already reissued Staton's first two Fame albums - "I'm Just A Prisoner" and "Stand By Your Man" - which received rave reviews and put Staton's classic music on the turntables of an old and new generation. This is the third card in that three card trick to complete the series. This special album-replica CD version contains liner notes by our own Ian Shirley and fantastic photos from the FAME archive, "Candi Staton" looks as good as it sounds.

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1971 album from the Blues/R&B vocalist. Etta is one of the greatest-ever singers of Soul and R&B, male or female. She spent her glory years at Chess Records of Chicago, releasing 13 marvelous LPs on the company's Argo, Cadet and Chess imprints between 1960 and 1975. 22 tracks. Kent Records.

'Funky Way' was the label's first release and a hit in 1967, despite limited airplay due to having the word "funky" in the title. It went on to become an early funk classic, covered by Rufus Thomas for Stax, Tommy Strand for Fame, Jimmy Bee for Kent, Ray Johnson and others. Though mainly recorded in Los Angeles, Calvin Arnold was a southern soul singer from Atlanta, Georgia and the material is in that vein - there are Mighty Hannibal produced tracks, recorded in Atlanta. Apart from the eight released sides, Mickey Stevenson's tapes have provided five previously unreleased numbers including the up-tempo mover 'Your Love Is Too Much' and the superb southern funk grooves of 'Trying To Fly My Kite (In Rainy Weather)' and 'Fool Me Baby'. The package features never before seen photos and a 5,000-word biography of the revered singer from Atlanta musicologist Brian Poust.

A long-overdue addition to Ace's ongoing Songwriter Series, the words and music of brothers Brian and Edward Holland and their colleague Lamont Dozier were and still are the foundation on which the international success of The Motown Sound was built. Between 1963 and 1968 Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote hit after hit for Berry Gordy's company, their songs making stars of some of Motown's biggest names - including but not limited to the Supremes and Four Tops. From 1969 to 1973 the trio carried on penning smashes and classics for their own Invictus/Hot Wax/Music Merchant set up, creating new stars in the Honey Cone and Freda Payne, among others. Holland-Dozier-Holland songs have been revisited many times by all sorts of artists, and "A Different World" brings two dozen diverse names and interpretations of their repertoire, with Motown and Invictus stalwarts like the aforementioned Supremes and Tops (as well as Martha and the Vandellas, Kim Weston, the Miracles and more) sharing disc space with The Band, Brenda Lee, The Vanilla Fudge, Laura Nyro and even The Fall - just a few of the non-traditional names who reinterpret Holland-Dozier-Holland's vison of 'The Sound Of Young America' in their own individual and inimitable ways. As ever, "A Different World's booklet is packed with label shots, copious other images and an extensive sleeve note that gives deep detail about the featured songs. It may be long-overdue, but it is an essential tribute to a stellar writing team and is well worth the wait!

Different World: The Holland-Dozier-Holland Songbook / Various

'Wear Your Natural, Baby' was a good seller when issued on Kent Harris' Romark label in the late 60s - judging by the, at least, three pressings of it. Understandably so, as it is a captivating rhythm for a then very current political and fashionable message. Towana was in fact Ty Karim, singing under her young daughter's name. On this flip, Ty recorded as herself on a cover of the CB Overton's hit 'If I Can't Stop You'. However, Kent Harris decided to not go with this recording at the time and re-cut it with new lyrics as 'Keep On Doin' Whatcha' Doin' as a duet with George Griffin issued in 1980 on Sheridan House. That record has become a modern soul classic over time and this alternate solo version, with the different lyrics, by Ty is sure to excite lovers of that genre.

Wear Your Natural, Baby / If I Can't Stop You (I Can Slow You Down)

Melvin Davis' 'Wedding Bells' 45 - first issued on the Ke Ke label out of Detroit in 1964, was an early Dave Hamilton project that he collaborated with Melvin for. Both sides are noteworthy, 'It's No News' has particularly amusing lyrics over a dance-friendly rhythm. Melvin is a legendary singer and sometime drummer who has suffered ill health in recent years; this release is our tribute to him. Known as Detroit's soul ambassador, all those who have met him will testify as to how great a guy he is.
